Print Transport Boxes for Fellow Artists

Print Boxes Print Box Closed

Build a Box for your prints.

Fits 11”x14” Prints

Project Time: About 4 hours

Materials Needed:

Tools needed:

  • Tape Measure
  • Square
  • Heavy duty rivet gun
  • Drill with 3/16” and 1/8” drill bit
  • Jig saw or circular saw or table saw
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Miter Box

Proceedure:

Step 1. Begin by measuring out your plywood box. Be precise! I wanted a little slosh room so that I could get my fingers in around the prints inside the box.

1 Bottom of Box = 15 ½” x 12 ½”

2 Long sides = 15 7/8” x 10”

2 Short sides = 12 ½” x 10”

1 Lid = 16 5/8” x 13 5/8”

Step 2. Assemble plywood box using the staple gun. Staple the sides on to the bottom. Staple the sides onto the edge of the bottom. This is just temporary. The real strength will come from the fiberglass sides and rivets.

Step 3. Measure and cut your fiberglass panels

1 bottom = 15 7/8” x 12 7/8” (should match the bottom of your box. Trim as needed.)

2 Long sides = 15 7/8” x 10”

2 Short side = 12 7/8” x 10”

1 Lid = 16 5/8” x 13 5/8”

Step 4. Tuftex Deckdrain flaps are too wide so cut your Tuftex Deckdrain flaps down to 1 1/8” wide on each side then cut each piece to length to match corners.

4 corners = 10” long

2 bottom long corners = 15 7/8”

2 bottom short corners = 12 7/8”

2 Lid long corners = 16 5/8”

2 Lid short corners = 13 5/8”

Step 5. Begin assembly.

Turn your plywood box upside down. Place your bottom fiberglass panel and 2 adjacent fiberglass panels on your box. Place your corner strips on the box. Place your metal corner over everything on the box. Using your metal corner as a guide drill a 3/16” inch hole in the bottom of your box. Place your first rivet, tighten. Drill the side holes and rivet. Proceed with other corners.

Drill and place a rivet in the middle of each corner piece.

Step 6. Now on the top edge cut / trim your plastic end cap molding all the way around the top lip of your box by sliding it over your fiberglass panel and between your plywood outer surface. See Diagram.

Step 7. Now measure down from the box opening 1 ½” and place your L bracket. Using your L bracket as a guide drill into the sides of your box and rivet secure. Place rivet in the middle of each side 1 ½” down from the lip.

Step 8. Now evenly space the rest of the rivets on every corner.

Step 9. Build the Lid

Using your plywood panel, fiberglass panel, corner strips place, drill and rivet your top panel. For the sides change drill bit to 1/8” and drill corner strips. Use smaller rivets and secure corners.

Step 10. Center handle and rivet to a side.

Using the waste from your tuftex deckdrain corners cut a square piece 3 ¼” x 3 ¼”. Place strap under your square and rivet to the side.

Step 11. Line box with Felt Cloth

Cut your cloth to fit. Use a hot glue gun and glue your felt to bottom, sides and lid.

And you are done!
